Scattergood marches against Afghan war

Taking part in Saturday’s peace march by Scattergood Friends School, Liadh Reilly saw a chance to draw attention to the war in Afghanistan.

“The important thing is to raise awareness,” the senior from Ireland said. “People think the war in Iraq is more important, but we’re spending more money on Afghanistan and killing more people there.”

About 20 students and staff took part in the 15-mile walk from their West Branch campus to Iowa City, carrying signs that said “War is Costly” on one side, and “Peace is Priceless” on the other, displaying drawings of Afghan children. Other signs read “War is not the Answer.”

Motorists and pedestrians honked and waved at the students as they passed through West Branch.

When the group arrived in Iowa City’s downtown, they held a flash-mob style exhibit of drawings by Afghan middle- and high-school pupils, showing how their daily lives are marred by war. The school acquired the drawings through a Quaker group called American Friends Service Committee which works with Afghan children.

The Walk for Peace preceded a Sunday reception for “Windows and Mirrors: Reflections on the War in Afghanistan” at the Coralville Public Library. The exhibit includes of the drawings the marchers displayed Saturday — 25 large-scale replica paintings and 10 drawings by the Afghan children — as Scattergood is one of the sponsors of the month-long exhibit.
