The girls freshman basketball team on Nov. 27 lost to South Tama 52-26.

Shannon Laing led the team with 10 points and Mary Baldwin had 6 points. Kylie Hesseltine and Emmy Shawver led the team in rebounding each with 5 rebounds. Leah Hott led the team with 4 assists and Shawver had 3 assists. Hott also had 4 steals and Hesseltine had 3 steals.

“I thought the girls played with a lot of energy and hustle,” Coach Jarod Tylee said. “These early non-conference games are to help show what needs to be worked on and this was a good gauge for us. The girls are going to improve individually and as a team throughout the season and continue to work hard.”

In the sophomore game, the team fell 61-39. Ashley Finnegan led the team with 12 points and Paige Donohoe and Meagan Simpson each had 7 points. Finnegan led the team with 7 rebounds and Lindsey Bruns had 5 rebounds. Courtney Bruns led the team with 3 assists and Kelli Vaughan and Emylee Skay each had 2 assists. Paige Donohoe led the team with 6 steals.

“We came out in the first half and didn’t play as well as we are capable of and dug ourselves a pretty big hole,” Tylee said. “I thought we came out in the second half and worked a lot harder and showed more hustle. These girls are undersized and will continue to have to outwork their opponents with hustle and energy, and I know as the season goes forward they will do that every time out.”
