I.C. Regina ends volleyball team’s season
by Tommy Morgan, Jr. · Sports · October 29, 2008

Volleyball season ended early for the West Branch Bears in Iowa City last Tuesday.

Regina defeated West Branch three games to one in the first round of the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union class 2A regional tournament.

West Branch won the first game of the match 25-19.

“We started out with a bang,” Head Coach Tom Burger said. “But Regina took control in game two.”

The Regals did just that, picking up the second game 25-19. Regina then went on to win the final two games by scores of 25-22 and 25-19.

“We were down most of game three, but we kept fighting,” Burger said. “Regina jumped ahead in game four and we were pretty flat. A lot of things improved though.”

Burger highlighted the team’s offensive play as an improvement, despite the loss. The Bears recorded 49 kills, a season high, during the match. They also had 14 blocks and six aces.

The Bears were led in serving by junior Lindsey Zimmerman, who was 18 for 18 with one ace, and junior Lydia Hahn, who served 13 of 15 successfully with two aces. Five players had more than 10 successful serves during the match.

West Branch finished the season with a 13-23 record. They were 2-8 in conference play.

“These kids didn’t have any type of varsity experience” to start the season, Burger said. “We did better than I expected.”

The Bears finished September with 11 wins and 12 losses, and picked up a championship at the Lisbon tournament. October saw a different Bears team, though, one that went through more downs than ups.

“We hit rock bottom towards the first of October,” Burger said. The Bears were 2-11 in October.

But the success of the team, according to Burger, could not be measured solely by their win-loss record. Improving and becoming better players were the true measures of how the team fared throughout the season.

“The team worked hard in practice and did things to get themselves better. As a coach that’s what you want to see,” Burger said. “We improved in all areas.”
