Sports · October 08, 2008

Trailing the Panthers 21-7 at halftime on Saturday, the Bears left no doubt what they were made of by scoring 28 unanswered points and defeating Pekin 35-21.

Undefeated on the season at 6-0, the Fresh-Soph proved to be an exciting warm up game and pumped up the crowd for the upcoming varsity game Friday night in Pekin.

The Bears defense turned bullish limiting Pekin to just 26 total yards in the second half while creating three turnovers and the offense ignited on all cylinders almost scoring at will in the fourth quarter.

The comeback got started when a Logan Lukavsky interception gave the Bears the ball at the Panther 28-yard line early in the third quarter. Four plays later, Brandon Young completed a pass to Jacob Sheyko who would stretch out for a 17-yard touchdown to draw the Bears within seven points.

The unforgiving Bears defense would stop the Panthers on a fourth and nine giving the offense the ball on the Pekin 35. Eight plays later seconds in the fourth quarter, Jake Slocum powered in from the 5-yard line to tie the game at 21 each after Young kicked the extra point.

Pekin’s next drive stalled behind the stalwart West Branch defense and the Bears gained possession on their 43-yard line. Three plays later Travis Maher caught a Young pass and took it to the house for a 51 yard TD putting the Bears on top 28-21 with 5:26 remaining in the game.

Pekin would underestimate the Bears again and fail on a fourth down conversion giving the ball deep in their territory at their 11-yard line. Slocum would carry the ball twice and pound it into the endzone from the 2 yard line. Young’s kick split the uprights and the Bears lead 35-21.

The defense was lead by Rilen Carew with eight solo and two assisted tackles. Derrick Miller also paced the D with four solo and four assisted tackles. Clay Cook and Young each had a sack, while Lukavsky and Young each added interceptions.

The Fresh-Soph will face Solon October 13th at 6 p.m. in Solon.
