Cedar Valley Voices: 2024 presidential election equates to trial of century
by Larry Hogdgen · Op-Ed · April 24, 2024

Are you ready for the trial of the century? No, not the one where Donald Trump may be held accountable for what we all know to be criminal actions and obvious appalling behavior.
This trial is the one where we get to decide what kind of country we want to be, and you are on the jury.

Do we want to continue 240 years of democracy, or are we going to follow the path of autocracy and theocratic rule? Do we really believe in the rule of law and holding people accountable, all people? Are we going to stand up for the right of all people to vote and have that vote counted?

Should women have the right to decide, along with her physician, the most personal decision she will ever have to make? Do we want to make healthcare available to everyone no matter their wealth or position in life?

Do we want a country that values hard work and the right to negotiate pay and benefits? Should we care about clean air, clean water, and the future of our planet?

Do we care about the future of public schools where 90% of our children are educated regardless of their abilities or their parent’s income? Will our schools continue to be turned into fortresses to protect our children from gun violence? Do we prefer having school boards and local communities decide what is best for the education of our children and what books they can read, or should the state decide?

Do we want our veterans and military respected and cared for, our democratic alliances strengthened, our defense industries protected, our roads and bridges repaired, our trust in our institutions and the free press restored? The choice really is ours.

The evidence is all around for those who care to see. This trial will end on November 5, 2024, and the decision really is up to you.
