ISU sending WB native Wildman around state to teach about water
News · June 07, 2018

AMES — West Branch native Donovan Wildman is spending his summer traveling across the state as an Iowa State University (ISU) Water Resources Intern.

As a part of the Iowa Learning Farms and Water Rocks! programs, this unique internship focuses on conservation, agriculture, water quality and soil health during a summer full of hands-on learning and outreach experiences.

Donovan, an ISU sophomore majoring in agricultural and biosystems engineering (land and water engineering option) and minoring in agronomy, landed the prestigious position because of his background knowledge in agricultural issues and his eagerness to contribute to water quality research.

As a part of his internship, Donovan will staff the Conservation Station, a mobile learning lab that travels the state educating Iowans of all ages about the importance of clean water and healthy soil. You can find Donovan at field days, farmers markets, county fairs, day camps and other community events. Interns will present at 20-25 of these events over the summer.

“I like that the kids are interested in what we are talking about,” Donovan said of his experience so far. “I want to know that I’m doing something that has an impact and I can see that first-hand when I’m presenting in front of kids or even teachers. This is the building block of future careers, future people who may grow up to be just like me.”

The Water Resources Summer Internship is sponsored by the Water Rocks! and Iowa Learning Farms outreach programs. Water Rocks! is a unique, award-winning statewide water education program that fosters the interplay of knowledge, caring and engagement among Iowa’s youth. Iowa Learning Farms is building a culture of conservation among farmers and other Iowans. For more information about Water Rocks!, visit www.waterrocks.org.
