Secrest barn program May 17

Rich Tyler will host “Why Save A Barn?: The Story of the Secrest 1883 Octagonal Barn” 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 17, at the Iowa City Public Library in Room A.

This is the story of the saving of one of the oldest and largest octagonal barns in the United States. An early Johnson County farmer, Joshua Secrest, hired local builder Frank Longerbeam to build this one-of-a-kind architectural marvel in 1883. Longerbeam has been referred to as a Master builder by State Historian Lowell Soike. Tyler will detail the background of how laminated arches were used to create the gothic roof. He will also share the continued commitment of individuals and organizations that have rallied around Iowa farming history to contribute to the saving of this barn. The work could not have been accomplished without grant support from the State Historical Society of Iowa and the local Friends of Historic Preservation. Supported by Humanities Iowa: free.
