Bears edge out Golden Hawks by one stroke

Mid-Prairie hosted West Branch’s boys golf team Monday and cut 17 strokes off from the last time they played at the Kalona course.

But the Bears did better — by one stroke — and did it without their No. 1 golfer, Ted Bridges.

West Branch shot 180 to the Golden Hawks’ 181 to earn their second meet win of the season, both of which came on the road.

“Kalona is a difficult golf course and Ted … was home sick” Head Bears Coach Randy Sexton said. “So I was very pleased (with the win).”

Trevor Thein and Brady Lukavsky led the varsity with 42 each and took home runner-up medalist honors. Matt Whaley shot 47 and Cade Aspelmeier shot 49 to contribute to the Top Four score.

Mitchell Knoop shot 50 and Evan O’Neil shot 53 to round out the Top Six varsity golf scores.

Sexton said the team loaded up on the bus afterward talking about how they could have done better.

“It was refreshing to hear the boys know they can still improve,” he said.

The rain held off for all but the last two holes, but earlier rains left the course “very wet,” the coach said. That meant “we were not getting any kind of roll” and putts went slower, he said, so the already long course seemed that much longer.

“The rains had an effect,” he said.

Several of the younger players encountered the Kalona golf course for the first time.

“It made for a kind of interesting day,” Sexton said.

This was only the second meet of the season, but the coach said a couple of players are already starting to separate themselves from JV.

“That was a surprise to myself and the coaching staff to see guys stepping up and shooting good scores,” he said. “It will be interesting to see how it all shakes out.”

In the junior varsity meet, the home team beat the visitors 221-251.

Scoring for junior varsity were Jack Robertson with 51, Kristian Nalan with 64, Bryce Simpson with 69 and Alex Miller with 73.

Other JV scores: Zach Linn 76, Matt Paulsen 74, Ben Colbert 73, Barrett Walsh 80, Jackson Taylor 75.
