Cedartown, Ga. — Rev. Nancy F. English, formerly of West Branch and Iowa City, passed away suddenly in her home during the early hours of July 21, 2016.

She had recently returned from visits to Los Angeles and Eastern Iowa, catching up with family and friends. Her funeral service was conducted Thursday, July 28, at the Anna E. Kresge Memorial United Methodist Church in Cedartown. A celebration of her life is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Saturday, August 20, 2016, at West Branch Friends Church with a light lunch afterwards.

Nancy Jean Frazier was born June 23, 1935, to Preston and Mildred (Baker) Frazier in Cedartown, Ga. She graduated from Cedartown High School in 1953 and left home to pursue a degree at Oglethorpe University in Atlanta. While a student, she met her husband, Rev. Edward M. English, and they were married June 10, 1956. She later completed her undergraduate studies with a degree conferred by the University of Iowa in 1980.

Nancy supported her husband’s Methodist ministry in New Jersey and New York, eventually settling in Iowa. She became Recorded as a Minister of the Religious Society of Friends in 1981, sharing the pulpit with her husband at West Branch Friends Church, then as pastor of the Welsh Church at Old Man’s Creek (UCC) in rural Iowa City. Following her retirement from the University of Iowa, she served as pastor at Maryville (Tenn.) Friends Church. She was serving Lindsey Chapel Methodist Church in Cedartown, Ga., at the time of her passing.

During her career at the University of Iowa, she worked for University News Service, then as the administrative assistant to the Director of Hancher Auditorium. As the assistant to the chairman of the Department of Chemistry, she helped to facilitate the construction of the Iowa Advanced Technology Laboratories and was active with the International Facility Management Association.

Nancy served in various Friends organizations, including the Friends World Committee for Consultation — Section of the Americas and the United Society of Friends Women International. She was active in the Georgia Choral Society, was a member of the Three Rivers Singers, and served as a Chaplain to the Polk County (Ga.) Sheriff’s Department.

She is survived by sisters Sherry Champion of Cedartown, Ga., Donna (Don) Gamel of Stone Mountain, Ga., and Milda (Gray) Pettit of Cedartown, Ga.; brother Phillip (Margie) Frazier of Lindale, Ga.; sons, M. Edward (Tanya), Jonathan Preston (Lisa), of West Branch, Iowa, and Andrew Joseph of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; grandchildren Joseph (Kristi) English of North Liberty, Iowa. Liberty English of Portland, Ore., Betsy English of Souderton, Pa., Andrew (AJ) English of Los Angeles, Calif., David English of Des Moines, Iowa, Melody English of Boise, Idaho, Daniel English of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Samuel English of Iowa City; great-grandchildren Deacon, Marcus, Annie, and Daisy Jene; and numerous nieces and nephews who loved their “Aunt Nancy.”

She was preceded in death by parents Preston and Mildred Frazier; husband Rev. Edward M. English; still-born grandson Edward Oliver English; and still-born great-grandson Aidan Michael Ashby-English.
