Floyd Thomas Fawcett, 95, of West Branch, died Saturday, Nov. 4, 2006 at Crestview Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in West Branch, following a brief illness.


Services will be 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 8 at the Hickory Grove Friends Meetinghouse located at 1951 Delta Avenue, two miles east of West Branch. Burial will be at the Hickory Grove Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4-8 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 7 at the Henderson-Barker Funeral Home, 201 Pedersen St., West Branch.

Floyd was born July 25, 1911 near West Branch. He was the son of Logan M. and Malissa R. Thomas Fawcett. As a senior, Floyd was a member of the 1929 undefeated West Branch football team. He attended William Penn College and later graduated from Iowa State University with a bachelor of science in animal husbandry.

While at ISU he met his wife, Mary Helen Miller, on a blind date. They were married May 20, 1939 in Marshalltown in the Methodist Church. After their wedding, they lived and worked on the family farm near Centerdale for over 60 years.

Floyd was a lifelong member of the West Branch Conservative Friends Meeting and served on the Scattergood Friends School Committee. He was very active in the West Branch community and served in many capacities including member and president of the West Branch School Board, member of the West Branch Bank Board for over 50 years, and a founding member of the Herbert Hoover Birthplace Society. Floyd later served as a trustee of the Herbert Hoover Presidential Library Association from 1958 until present in various capacities, including president and vice chairman. He was also a member of the West Branch Lions Club, West Branch Masonic Lodge, Eastern Star, West Branch Heritage Foundation, Cedar County Conservation Board, and the West Branch Development Commission. His interest in the welfare of the West Branch community continued until his death.

Survivors include his children, Martha (Ken) Luke of West Branch and Palm Coast, Fla., John Fawcett and his friend Claudine Weiher of Washington D.C., Ken (Helen) Fawcett of West Branch, Margie (Tim) Green of Cape Coral, Fla.; grandchildren, Kendra Stuart and her friend David Albaugh of West Branch, Kyle (Linda) Stuart of Wichita, Kan., Kent (MarKay) Stuart of West Branch, Allen (Elaine Zimmerman) Fawcett of Washington D.C., Katherine Fawcett and her friend Lee Suggs of Cleveland, Ohio, Leanna (Troy) Vincent of Iowa City, Thomas (Jennifer) Fawcett of Ames, Logan Kraus of Orlando, Fla., Andy Kraus of Cape Coral, Fla.; great-grandchildren Ashley (Truman) Schabilion of Eden Prairie, Minn., Adam Stuart of Orlando, Fla., Lindsay Stuart, Kaitlyn Stuart and Braden Stuart of Wichita, Kan., and Owen Fawcett of Washington D.C. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Mary Helen, and brothers Everett and Alfred.

A memorial fund has been established.
