Letter: Why do we treat ‘different’ differently?
Op-Ed · April 07, 2016

Our long season of grays and browns is over. Returning to brighten our world are the greens and yellows of new growth, which will be followed by blossoms of every color imaginable.

The variety of colors and visual textures are a joyful blessing from God. We are blessed by rich varieties in sounds, as well. Bird songs, calm rivers and rushing waters, wind songs and absolute quiet. Variety in our natural world includes the rolling fields of Iowa and the Himalayan heights.

The rocky windswept coasts of northern climates, and the peaceful, restful sandy beaches found in the southern areas of this country.

Why do we not regard differences in humanity as pleasing and valuable?

Skin colors, spiritual approaches, talents and skills, even gender variations?

How do we break free of fear of the “other” and move towards appreciating all people for their contributions to the whole, rather than tearing them down for their “variety”?
