Letter: ‘Iowa Values’ label way overused in campaigns
Op-Ed · October 24, 2014

Thank you West Branch Times for the venue. I need to express my frustrations. Between the last few weeks of letters to the editor, the barrage of political advertisements on the television, and the total lack of experience in the current administration, I have pretty much reached my limit.

This is like a three ring circus, with no ringmaster. We have donkeys running around bleating about no more hay (freebies), elephants waving their trunks at God knows what, and the rest of us in the middle ring wondering what happened to our country.

The most over-used label I hear is “Iowa Values.” I am not sure there is a consensus out there that even remembers what Iowa values are. Where did all these carpetbaggers come from? I am an Iowa native, a woman, a graduate of Iowa’s school system, a U.S. Navy veteran, a homeowner, a taxpayer, a mother, a grandmother, and one really upset American.

I am tired of hearing about a woman’s right to choose about her own body and her own health, when my rights are being trampled right and left. I am not even asking for the right to murder someone. I just want the government to leave me alone! I am a smoker. I have been for the last 54 years and yet I can’t go here or I can’t go there. Where are my rights to my own body and my own health? Nobody is arguing about birth control, do what you wish. When it comes down to killing something God has created, that is a different story. Why are those women more important than my wishes and me?

Who cares about who is paying for the political ads? What is the difference between outside money and those who invade Iowa with non-Iowa values? Free speech is free speech, is it not? How about we take a poll of the faculty and staff of the University of Iowa and see how many are really native Iowans. What do you think that response would be? The progressives don’t want voter ID, and yet they want to tout the values of Iowans. How about we really make sure that Iowans are the ones who are voting?

My government-required insurance company wants me to have a visiting nurse come to my home and evaluate my health so I may take advantage of all the opportunities available to me. I don’t want government interference in my health. Where is my choice? I don’t take their money …leave me alone!

Farmers used to stand on their own. Schools used to be run by local school boards. There was a time when you could build what you wanted on your own land. Those were Iowa values. What is so wrong with getting rid of the Department of Education, the Department of Environmental Protection, and the Department of Health and Human Services? Are we Iowans really that stupid? Only progressives think we are incapable of governing our own lives. That is because they like CONTROL.

I support Bobby Kaufmann, even though I cannot vote for him, Joni Ernst, and Charles Grassley. I have never forgiven “what’s his name” for trying to tell me HE had the power to give me rights. Only God gives me rights! Those of you who are of my generation are dying out. I thank my lucky stars I am not any younger. This is only going to get worse. I wish my grandchildren could have experienced what it was like to live in Iowa under real IOWA VALUES, before the carpetbaggers.
