Opposed, but Knoop still president

Despite a challenge by a fellow board member, Kathy Knoop retained her seat as president of the West Branch Board of Education when the board reorganized earlier this month.

And Mike Colbert was re-elected vice president despite another nomination to that post.

On Sept. 8, board member Mike Owen nominated Knoop for president because he said “she has done a good job.”

“We are on a good course,” he said.

However, Colbert nominated board member Deb Schreiber, though not because of opposition to Knoop.

“I just think we should rotate the top position frequently,” he said.

Knoop spoke briefly to the board, saying she “likes being a positive voice” and feel she and Superintendent Kevin Hatfield work well together.

“I enjoy working with everybody,” she said. “I would look forward to another year.”

Schreiber also addressed the board, saying she would be “very interested” in the presidency.

“I have a passion for education, I live it every day,” she said.

Owen then made a motion to elect Knoop, and he and board member Richard Paulus voted “yes” while Schreiber and Colbert voted “no.” Knoop then cast a tie-breaking vote of “yes.”

For vice president, Owen nominated Schreiber, which was seconded by Colbert.

Schreiber declined the nomination and offered Colbert’s name instead.

The board unanimously elected Colbert to vice president.

Board secretary Angie Klinkkammer then administered the oath of office to Knoop and Colbert as officers for the coming year.
