Character’s Pub planning Feb. 8 opening

Characters Pub, a restaurant and bar, will replace Bruster’s as soon as Feb. 8, even with an interior remodeling project under way.

Marc Rosen, Cory Nolan and Heather Martens have formed a partnership to run the new restaurant. Martens will serve as the full-time, on-site manager.

Remodeling began this past week on the interior. Rosen said the restaurant will include caricatures of notable people in the area, hence the name.

“It’s called ‘Characters’ because I think everyone in this town is one,” he said. “I really do.”

One key difference with Bruster’s, which had its bar in the smaller section of the building, is that the two rooms will be switched, Rosen said. He said he believes the number of patrons to each part of the establishment will justify the flip.

Much of the food offered will be similar fare to Bruster’s, he said. Breakfast will include things like eggs, pancakes, biscuits and gravy; lunch will include items like burgers, tenderloin sandwiches and specialty burgers; and the children’s menu will have corn dogs, macaroni and cheese and mini-pizzas.

Rosen said the three have not yet worked out how many they will employ, but said he thinks it will be fewer than Bruster’s.

The restaurant-and-bar will be open Monday through Thursday 7 a.m. to midnight, Friday and Saturday 7 a.m. to 2 a.m., and Sunday 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.

On opening night, the pub will welcome new patrons at 4 p.m. and there will be a live band performing.

Rosen did not say how much the renovation will cost, but said it was a “good chunk of change.”

Bruster’s building not sold to accommodate Character’s

Jim and Sandy Weldon, owners of the building that was home to Bruster’s for two years, said that new restaurateurs Marc Rosen, Cory Nolan and Heather Martens did not buy the building.

Rather, the three have an option to buy as part of their one-year lease agreement.

Bruster’s owner Bruce Schilling said last week that he understood the three bought the building from Weldon.

“We want to wish (Bruce) good luck,” Jim Weldon said. “We wish nothing but good things for him.”

Rosen said that Schilling’s lease was ending and that he and two others agreed to move in after Bruster’s closed.
