82nd Indivisible Group: Collecting food in defiance of King Trump’s plans
Op-Ed · May 28, 2025

This week, Wal-Mart announced it will be raising prices. CNN reports we can expect from 10 to 30 percent price hikes soon on anything from windshield wipers to soccer balls to bananas.
This is every American watching the sky fall.

Why are prices going up instead of down like our president promised? Because of tariffs, which are effectively a sales tax, that he has imposed on us. And every day, while everyone from Wall Street to Main Street suffers economic convulsions, that one man decides how badly we’ll hurt.

High prices aren’t a partisan issue. They’re an American one.

Meanwhile, Social Security is bleeding out. Calling to sign up, make changes or ask a question? Prepare to talk to a chatbot who will put you on terminal hold. Why? Because the unelected Department of Government Efficiency decided that you no longer need access to the program that for the last 89 years working people have paid into and counted on when they retire.

This too is an American issue. It hurts all of us when we or the elderly we know can’t access the financial safety net we banked on all our lives.

Why can one man wield so much power? Republicans control Congress, so it’s not even an end-run around Democrats. Then why isn’t Trump using the legal process required by our Constitution to win Congressional approval?

Because this is an end-run around the checks and balances put in place to prevent one branch of government from overpowering another. This is what kings do.

That is why, this year, we are declaring June 14th, Flag Day, to be No Kings Day. We refuse to kneel in fear as the democracy we love is pillaged and burned to the ground.

Locally, we’re providing mutual aid as a reminder that we serve each other, not a king. Volunteers from 82nd Indivisible will be on the street collecting non-perishable food and personal hygiene products in West Branch, West Liberty and Tipton. With your help, people hardest hit by program cuts, layoffs and rising prices will get the assistance they need.

You can donate beforehand and that day. Write to 82nd.indivisible@gmail.com to volunteer and for drop-off locations or leave a message at 319.480.4241.

Next Social: Wednesday, May 28 at 5 p.m. at Whitey’s Bar and Grill, 125 US-30, Lisbon.
