The West Branch girls’ golf team improved on its season best with plenty of big gains in a 189-219 dual setback April 8 at home against Mid-Prairie.
“Mid-Prairie has a very solid team and some impressive scores,” West Branch Head Coach Angie Miller said. “Although we fell short of the win, we still improved our team score by three strokes. The girls have been working hard both as a team and individually on things that they know they need to work on. Our putting was much better, which was a struggle in our first meet.”

Olivia Thomas led the way for the Bears with a 51, taking fourth behind a trio of Golden Hawks who shot in the 40’s. Romy Springensguth followed with a 53 in her second dual with the Bears.

West Branch saw improvement from its final three golfers, as each improved on their scores from the Bears’ season-opening dual March 31 at home. McKenna Worrell lopped six strokes off her opening to card a 55 and place eighth, while Kaylynn Stein shot up from a 66 in her debut to take 10th with 60. Adelyn Hetrick improved by two strokes off her first round to finish 11th with a 61.

“Kaylynn and McKenna both had great rounds and showed great improvements from our first dual,” Miller said, noting that Stein “has a great swing and lots of natural talent.” The coach also said that Worrell was “definitely frustrated” with her first round of the season and that the improved round was a needed boost for her confidence.

The dual was postponed a day due to high winds. The weather cooperated on the makeup date, with sunny conditions and a much lighter wind. Miller said that “the weather was once again very calm,” which helped the girls stay confident in their games while “not trying to fight any of the weather conditions.”

An April 16 road dual at Durant was next up on the Bears’ calendar. The coach said she felt the team was looking forward to playing away from Cedars Edge, adding that three of the five golfers had familiarity with Wahkonsa. Miller concluded that her main goals for the team is to “keep working on bringing our team score down each time, and most importantly to have fun while we are doing it.”
