Piles of donations collected for DAV

About 30 people donated piles of items to the benefit of disabled veterans on Saturday, pleasing the organizer of the drive.

West Branch’s Brooklyn Nash hosted the drive for the Disabled American Veterans organization. The donations will go to the Veterans Liberty Center and the Veterans Administration hospital, both in Iowa City.

Nash said it felt “really good” to collect the donations.

“It was a lot more than I expected it to be,” she said.

Nash said she used to volunteer with the VA hospital, but as a senior at West Branch High School, it took up too much of her time. So, she agreed to take assignments from the DAV, and this donation drive was her first.

Posting about it on social media, she asked residents to drop of items at Town Hall on Saturday, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Residents brought bed frames, bed sheets, toiletries, food, clothing, and more.

The newer items will go to the VA hospital.

“The VA is a little picky about what they take,” she said.

Those who missed Saturday’s drive may still donate. Nash said they may send her an email at wbnash297@gmail.com and she will drive by and pick items up. She said that, depending on the donor, some prefer to meet her halfway, which also works.

According to their Facebook page, the Veterans Liberty Center, 2116 South Riverside Drive in Iowa City, “is a place for people to socialize and get Veterans services. We provide information on getting Veterans help if needed.”
