Thomas D. Hildreth, 66, Apache Junction, Ariz., died on Oct. 16, 2013, at Ryan House Hospice Center in Phoenix, Ariz., following a stroke.

Tom was born in Ames, Iowa, on May 9, 1947, to Donald G. and Virginia Hildreth. Tom graduated from Valley High School in 1965 and Drake University in 1975 with a bachelors degree in education. He taught social studies and coached for 36 years. Tom married Jane E. Bauman in 1970 and lived in West Branch, Iowa. He taught in the middle school and organized trips to Washington DC.

Tom loved his Lord, country and his family. His interests were wide-ranging. He participated in Civil War reenacting, loved a good garage sale, always hoping to find the next treasure for his many collections. He drank coffee every morning and was a member of the CAVE club solving many of the world’s problems. Tom enjoyed camping and fishing, reading westerns, and cheering on Iowa and the Pittsburgh Steelers. He cherished his memories teaching at Anderson Air Force Base in Guam, and traveling in Asia. He was a member of the Masonic Order, the Republican Party, and served on the West Branch City Council. Tom was a member of the Sunland Village Chapel in Mesa, Ariz.

Tom retired from the teaching in Des Moines and moved to Arizona to enjoy the sunshine and great friendships in Las Palmas Del Sol East.

Tom is survived by his wife, Jane; daughter, Sestie; grandchildren, Keshawn and Navella; his mother Virginia; Sister Lee (Polley), and brothers Tim, Dan, Sam, Joe, and Don. He was preceded in death by his father Donald; and brother Matt.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the Sunland Village Chapel, 2145 S. Farnsworth Drive, Mesa, AZ 85208. A memorial service is pending next spring in Norwalk, Iowa.
