Ruth E. Raines, 93, of Hamilton, Mont., passed away in her sleep Tuesday, Sept. 3, 2013.

Born June 24, 1920, on a farm near West Branch, Iowa, Ruth was the daughter of Florence and Ed Kadera.

Well-educated, she received a B.S. degree in home economics from Iowa State University and a master’s in library science from the University of Connecticut.

During World War II, Ruth worked at Seaboard Ice Co. in Asbury Park, N.J., and served as a hostess at the USO Club. There she met Craig Raines, a sailor in the Royal Navy, who was from Newfoundland.

Ruth married Richard Craig Raines on Oct. 28, 1943, in New Haven, Conn. They shared 61 loving years, living most of it in Vernon, Conn., before Craig’s death in 2004. Ruth is survived by two sons, Richard Craig Jr. (Martha Jaquith) of Corvallis, Mont., and David Craig of Willington, Conn.

Ruth was a wonderful mother, a loving wife and an active member of her community. She worked. Following a full career as librarian at the University of Connecticut, she volunteered at Rockville General Hospital for 20 years and was president of the hospital auxiliary. In addition to her work and volunteering, Ruth authored two books. Ruth was active in the Talcottville Community Church, serving as a deacon for many years. She is a past grand matron of the Order of Eastern Star of Connecticut.

Private graveside services will be held at the Mount Hope Cemetery in Talcottville, Conn. The family requests no flowers; memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer Research and Prevention Foundation.
