WL man kicked by a cow by Gregory R. Norfleet · News · July 19, 2013
Scanner traffic reported that a man had been "gored by a bull" about 12:15 p.m. Saturday, but it turned out to be less serious.
West Branch Police Chief Mike Horihan said Charles Leroy Herrold, 71, of West Liberty and a member of the West Branch Animal Clinic staff were kneeling next to cow with an injured hoof at the veterinarian's office, 508 North Fourth St., when something startled a cow, though Horihan was unsure if it was the injured cow as Herrold had brought several cows in for vaccinations.
The startled cow kicked and knocked Herrold over, stepping on Herrold's leg in the process.
At first, it was thought Herrold had suffered a broken leg, but after Johnson County Ambulance Service took him to a nearby hospital for treatment, they only found bruises and abrasions, the chief said.
Herrold spent a day in the hospital and was released.
