WBFD responds to truck fire on I-80 by Gregory R. Norfleet · News · May 31, 2013
West Branch Fire Department responded about 7 a.m. May 21 to a truck on fire on Interstate 80 near the 262 milemarker in the westbound lane. Fire Chief Kevin Stoolman said the driver was unaware that the air brakes were engaged as he drove down the highway, which heated up and started the blaze, melting the tires on the driver's side in the rear of the cab.
"It happens quite a bit," Stoolman said of air brake fires.
The fire department had the fire extinguished in about 10 minutes but spent an hour on the scene, he said.
Iowa State Patrol Trooper Dan Loussaert said the fire was large enough to be a hazard to westbound traffic, so both lanes were shut down temporarily.
Both lanes were reopened about 7:30 a.m.
No injuries were reported.
Cedar County Sheriff's Department and the Iowa Department of Transportation were also called to the scene.
