Letter: More than 6,000 hours volunteering by grads

Thirty-five members of the Class of 2013 will receive Silver Recognition Cords for Community Service at Awards Night on May 20, 2013, as well as verbal recognition at graduation services.

This class has worked 6,007.75 hours of volunteer time serving their community.

They have laid sod, moved furniture and books, coached, directed traffic, served food, worked concessions, helped in classrooms, painted fire hydrants, tutored, worked as program aides and camp counselors, ran clocks and scoreboards, made noodles, landscaped, set up for track meets, acted as announcers at football games, helped with Kindergarten Round-up, painted murals, done clerical work, created and painted stage sets, trick-or-treated, played with and walked animals, carried equipment, organized books, chaperoned middle-school dances, helped with Vacation Bible School, helped with technology, managed younger students, ran errands, cashiered, cleaned up and set up, painted, set up flags, waited tables, gardened, sang, mentored, sewed, helped with horse camps, helped with youth sports, washed livestock, helped with science camp, took tickets, baked cookies, taught CCD and religious education in local churches, read to children, helped with cancer fundraisers, worked on mission trips, sandbagged after the flood of 2008, videotaped, washed cars, ran stage lights in school and in church, tagged items for sale, sorted donations, babysat for organizations, taught dance, face-painted, kept records, ushered, supervised and passed out flyers.

They worked for West Branch Athletics events and programs, Hoover Elementary, Youth Sports programs, Fine Arts Connection, Kinnick concessions, local churches, the City of West Branch, Crestview, West Branch Middle School, Herbert Hoover Historic Site and Library, Girl Scouts, Bowl for Kids’ Sake (Big Brothers/Big Sisters), RAGBRAI, various camps, the West Branch Fire Department, the PTO Carnival, Hometown Days, Lucas Rocks Golf fundraiser, UNICEF, Catholic Order of Foresters, the West Branch Public Library, Ronald McDonald House, “Fergalicious” 5K Run, Christmas Past, Rockets Volleyball, Ignite Volleyball, Kids Against Hunger, West Branch Community Schools Central Office, New Pioneer Co-op, American Legion, Salvation Army, the Cattlemen Association, Hip Hop Into High School, University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics Junior Volunteer Program, American Legion, After Prom Committee, Little League, Lions Club, Cedar County Stoplight Players, Booster Club, Girl’s AAU, Bailey Farms, Muscatine Agriculture Center, Eagle Scouts, Fun City, Cookson, Soccer Field, Tipton Town Hall, Animal Clinic, Reach for Your Potential, St. Ambrose University, Special Olympics, BSY – Families First, Camp Courageous, Olweus Program, West Liberty Elementary and 4-H.

Six thousand and seven hours over a four-year period of time. These young leaders have given back selflessly to their communities and have accomplished great things while they were in high school.

They have changed lives and have been role models.
