Charles “Chuck” Garner, 67, of Wilton died Thursday, April 4, 2013, at St. Luke’s Medical Center in Houston, Texas.

A memorial service will be held 11 A.M. Saturday, April 13, 2013, at the West Liberty Community Center. Visitation will be held an hour prior to the service. Online condolences may be to the family at The Henderson-Barker Funeral Home in West Liberty is in charge of arrangements.

Charles was born Sept. 3, 1945, in Keithsburg, Ill., the son of John and Nell E. (Ware) Garner. He served in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Germany. On June 30, 1973, he was united in marriage to Carol McNamara in Joy, Ill.

Chuck had worked with Union Local 150 as an operating engineer, operating heavy equipment for more than 40 years. He loved spending time at his cabin in New Boston, Ill., where his door was always open to friends and family dropping in for drinks or coffee. He enjoyed fishing, boating, building things, golfing, collecting coins and was said to never know a stranger. He loved his kids and grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, Carol Garner of Wilton; two children: William (Kelly Weinbrandt) Garner of Wilton and Kim (Dr. John) Hoffman of Bettendorf; eight grandchildren: Justin, Eric, Matt, Ryan, Lauren and Morgan Hoffman, Chapley and Jalay Garner; mother Nell Conklin of West Liberty; brothers David (Lois) Garner of New Boston and Ronald (Barbara) Garner of Redding, Calif.; and sister Luann (Fred Terwilliger) Shelton of Mt. Ayr, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his father, sisters Donna Munson and Dianne Reinhart, and brothers John Garner and Russell James Garner.
