Cement truck rolls

West Branch Fire Department and Iowa State Patrol responded to Interstate 80 at the 252 mile marker about 1:30 p.m. Friday after a cement truck being pulled by a tow truck broke loose and rolled into the median.

Fire Chief Kevin Stoolman said no one was injured, but the accident apparently created sparks that ignited the grass, causing a small fire.

Both lanes of traffic were blocked at first, but ISP troopers were able to reopen the right lane for eastbound traffic; still, many trucks and cars exited at Herbert Hoover Highway to cut through West Branch and get around the bottleneck, which reached back as many as four miles.
