UPDATE: Jones advances to semis, Pence moves to consolidation bracket by Gregory R. Norfleet · News · February 15, 2013
Senior Cade Jones won again today to advance to the semifinals at the state high school wrestling tournament, while teammate Casey Pence lost in the quarterfinals, but then won in the consolation round.
Both Jones and Pence will continue to battle for titles as the Iowa High School Athletic Association state wrestling tournament continues today through Saturday.
Pence, a junior, lost 4-2 to North Butler's Caleb Wedeking in the quarterfinals.
He then faced Sigourney-Keota's Josh Yoder, ranked No. 4 in the 145-pound class.
These two have met before, back in December, and Pence beat Yoder late in the third period with a pin. However, Yoder has since risen in the rankings.
Pence, ranked No. 10, upset Yoder, 10-4.
He will next face Ryan Joint of West Central Valley.
In the quarterfinal round, senior Cade Jones defeated South Winn's Chris Brincks 3-2, advancing to the semifinals.
However, he will not face No. 1 Adam Hawkins of BGM, who was upset in the quarterfinals by No. 5 East Buchanan's Tyler Hoffman, 9-5.
Hawkins accounted for Jones' only loss so far this season and wrestling fans anticipated seeing the two face each other at state.
So now Jones will take on Hoffman.
At 2:30 p.m. Friday, wrestling matches were on break in Des Moines.
