Hog building burns down
News · September 28, 2012

A hog building burned down Sept. 20 south of West Branch at Slach Farms. West Branch Fire Chief Kevin Stoolman said WBFD was called out about 2:15 a.m. about a building on fire.
Fire departments from West Liberty, Hills and Lone Tree responded to the farm just west of Downey on 325th Street to provide help.

“We could see the glow from the fire from West Branch,” Stoolman said. “When we pulled in, it was already on the ground.”

He said the “big” hog house had recently been emptied and was undergoing some work to get ready for more hogs.

Firefighters were on the scene until nearly 6 a.m.

Firefighter Josh Worrell tripped and fractured bones in his hand while battling the blaze.

Stoolman said the fire appeared to be accidental, but the cause of the fire was still undetermined.

“Several things are possible,” he said, saying it could have been mechanical.
