Hoover 50th celebration continues this weekend News · August 10, 2012
Fifty years ago on Aug. 10, as Herbert Hoover celebrated his 88th birthday, and he and friend Harry Truman dedicated the Herbert Hoover Presidential Library-Museum to the American people.
As a thank you to visitors on Friday, August 10, the Library-Museum will have free admission and serve anniversary cake.
On Friday at 6 p.m., the Library-Museum will host a reception and talk featuring former director Richard Norton Smith. Smith will reminisce about his time in Iowa and share stories about the American presidency. This is a ticketed event; for more information: 643-5301.
Saturday, August 11 at 1:00 p.m. is “An Afternoon of Conversations.” This free event will feature three former directors: John Fawcett (1987), Richard Norton Smith (1987-1993), and Timothy Walch (1993-2011). Current Library Director Thomas Schwartz will moderate this panel.
Another highlight of this afternoon will be a panel of former Library-Museum staff and local West Branch residents discussing the building of the Hoover Presidential Museum, how it has changed over the years, and the impact it has had on the town of West Branch.
Anniversaries are a time to celebrate accomplishments and start thinking about what lies ahead. Anniversaries also celebrate relationships. President Hoover sought to form a permanent relationship with the people of Iowa by placing his Library-Museum at this location. |
