Attempted theft or joy ride? Either way, $20K in damage by Gregory R. Norfleet · News · August 10, 2012
Police think it started as a joy ride, but it ended when two trucks receiving about $20,000 in damage.
West Branch Police Chief Mike Horihan said that sometime over the weekend, possibly a younger person “with knowledge of how to drive a truck,” found an extra set of keys belonging to a red 1981 Kenworth owned by Ray Slach of West Branch that had been parked at Moore’s Welding, 1343 Baker Ave.
Horihan said it appears someone started the truck, which was pulling a silver 1979 Heil trailer, and tried to take it for a ride but collided with a blue 1998 Peterbilt Conventional owned by Fobian Bros. of Iowa City. It was also parked at Moore’s Welding and connected to a 2010 Timpte trailer.
The tanker on the Slach truck apparently dragged against the corner of the second trailer, causing several large dents along the side and damaging the wheel covers. The Slach truck was driven about a quarter mile, then abandoned near Plato Electric, 1433 Plato Road.
When the Slach truck was found about 3 p.m. Monday, it would not start, Horihan said, and the Fobian vehicle had its lights left on but the battery was not dead. He thinks the same person or persons may have tried to steal the Fobian truck.
The investigation is continuing, the police chief said, and anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact the WBPD at 643-2222. |
