The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office wants to warn area residence about a telephone (telemarketing) scam.
It’s been reported that area residents have received phone calls where a computerized voice informs them that the offer to lower interest rate is almost over.
It then says to press “1” if you want to lower your interest rate. If the person receiving the call elects to press “1” personal and financial information is asked for using (trickery) or malicious software designed to data-mine the information.
This personal and financial information is then used to commit financial crimes and identity theft. It’s recommended that residents NOT share personal information or credit card information with unsolicited callers on the phone or through the Internet.
Other scamming incidents continue to occur. Including callers pretending to be bank examiners wanting to do an employee audit, or teller test and asking people to draw money out of a bank account and to not tell anyone in the bank what they are doing. They then are asked to deliver the money to a person who represents the bank but offers to meet them somewhere other than the bank.
The other scam that is also continuing to happen is where the person called is told that their grandchild or loved one is in jail and needs bond. They are asked to not contact other family members.
The Sheriff’s Office wants to remind everyone there are many scams out there and to please call local law enforcement or family members prior to sending any money or doing something that seems out of the ordinary.
