Wilder program Sept. 6
News · September 01, 2010

“Laura Ingalls Wilder Remembered” will be the theme of a free program at the Hoover Museum on Labor Day, Monday, September 6.

Traditional frontier music and prairie walks as well as a special show on Laura Ingalls Wilder and her work will be the feature of the day.

The program will begin at 1:30 pm with musical selections by the widely acclaimed Marengo Civil War Band. Following the music, Sarah S. Uthoff will portray Laura Ingalls Wilder shortly before she and Almanzo settle in at Rocky Ridge. In the program, Uthoff will use a period writing desk similar to the one that Laura used at Mansfield to reflect back on her momentous life. The program will be repeated at 3:00 pm.

Respected Wilder authority, Sarah S. Uthoff, is a reference librarian at Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. She has just been named to the Humanities Iowa Speakers Bureau. She was recently elected as the vice president of the Laura Ingalls Wilder Legacy and Research Foundation

Join National Park Rangers for prairie walks at 10:00, 1:30 and 3:00 p.m. in the 81-acre tallgrass prairie. These one-hour walks start at the Herbert Hoover Presidential Library and Museum. Park rangers will introduce families to the plants and animals of Iowa’s tallgrass prairies and discuss how the National Park Service is restoring this endangered habitat.

From 1 to 4 p.m., living history interpreters demonstrate historic crafts, games, school teaching, and other activities from 19th century West Branch. Games and home crafts demonstrations by costumed volunteers take place near the Herbert Hoover Birthplace Cottage. Visit the 1853 West Branch Schoolhouse for historic school teaching activities.

Visitors also may tour the Museum’s newest exhibit, Exploring Hoover’s Attic: Treasures, Keepsakes, Surprises, a delightful look at the unusual and beautiful items that the Hoover family acquired over 90 years.

There will be free admission to the special activities in the Museum and for the Prairie Walk; regular admission will be charged to go through the galleries on Labor Day.
