The 2010 West Branch softball team gathered at the home of Diana and Chuck Pence July 17 for a picnic and the presentation of awards.

The coaches were each presented with gifts of appreciation from the team.

Fresh/soph coach Kara Plagman spoke first about her team, which finished with a 12-2 conference record, 18-7-2 overall.

“They didn’t give up,” Plangman said of her team this season. “In Washington, I think we were down eight in the third. They chipped away, came back, and ended up winning by five.”

Plagman also said the her players “improved every game.” Some of the games that were highlights of the season were against Durant, Wilton, Mid-Prairie and Regina.

Captains for the fresh/soph team were Cassie Colvin and Lexi Baylor. Most improved players were Andrea Mundell and Katie Tucker. Receiving participation certificates for the fresh/soph team were Mundell, Kylie Hesseltine, Miranda Winneke, and Tucker.

For the varsity team, co-coach Brooke Kaalberg presented awards.

Receiving Cedar Valley Conference All-Conference awards were Hayley Pence, second team infield; Chelsey Robertson, second team outfield; and Kathleen Ward, second team catcher. Devin Bain and Heather Poula received honorable mention.

Receiving participation certificates were Pence, Ward, Poula, Taylor Wolf, Anna Tatman, Shannon Laing, Devin Bain, Chelsey Robertson, Jordan Arp, Colvin, Jen Pohlman, McKenna Sexton, Ashley Finnegan, Jori Robertson, Kirby Eagle, Mary Baldwin, Paige Donohoe, Leah Hott, Lexi Baylor, and Ainsle Northam.

“It seemed like we started the season, and the next day the season was over,” Kaalberg said. “I’m really proud of you guys. We finished fourth in the conference and had a winning season, which we haven’t had for seven years.”

Co-coach Butch Pedersen thanked the parents for their support, then addressed the four seniors, Tatman, C. Robertson, Pence, and Wolf. “You were the four kids who helped kick this thing off,” Pedersen said. “Nobody can ever take that away from you. When we have an even better season next year and the year after, you can say ‘I helped start that.’”

Pedersen encouraged the girls who will be coming back next season to continue working, especially the pitchers. “Pitching is huge,” he said. He urged the pitchers to keep working hard in the off season like they did last year.

“We’re right there at the door, knocking,” Pedersen said.
