Several girls basketball players received honors at the team’s awards dinner Feb. 26 at West Branch High School.
The awards for the girls’ teams were presented first. Varsity Coach Mike Johnston said that this season’s team, with a 16-6 record, had the best year win-wise in the last 25 years.
“We are progressing as a team,” he said, and he anticipates those coming up in the program will continue the winning tradition.
Participation awards were presented to Kelley Trimble, Jen Pohlman, Anna Bruns, Natalie Slach, Kirby Eagle, Jordan Arp, Tildy Randleman, Hayley Pence, Chelsey Robertson, Bethany Harms, and Jen Humrichouse.
The varsity team voted on additional awards, except Coach Johnston decided on the Coach’s Award.
Bruns and Slach got the Best Defensive Player Award. The Coach’s Appreciation Award went to Randleman. Best Offensive Player award was given to Trimble, who averaged 11.4 points per game. Most Improved Player went to Bruns, Best Rebounder to Arp, and Trimble got the MVP Award.
The team finished 12-2 in the conference, and four players received Cedar Valley Conference All-Conference Honors. Trimble was named to the first team, Arp and Harms to the second team, and Robertson received honorable mention.
Junior Varsity Coach Jarod Tylee presented participation awards to McKenna Sexton, Jamie Tucker, Cassie Colvin, Lexi Baylor, Heather Poula, Paige Donohoe, Kelli Vaughan, Lexi Luneckas, Jen Pohlman, and Lindsey Bruns.
The team finished with a 15-2 record after starting 1-3, and winning their final 14 games.
The coach chose the recipients of his awards. They were Best Team Players, Tucker and Donohoe; Best Hustle, Baylor, Luneckas, and Vaughan; Coach’s Appreciation Award, Poula, Bruns, and Colvin; and Most Improved Player Award, Pohlman, Sexton, and Jenny Blaalid.
Tony Luneckas presented participation awards to the freshman team: Emylee Skay, Courtney Bruns, Madi Gates, Sarah Fischer, Amber Eggers, Ann Owen, Meagan Simpson, and Lindsey Bruns.
The team finished 6-1 in the conference, 6-8 overall, and had the best conference record.
