Donald D. Beaver, 88, died Monday, Feb. 8, 2010, at the Simpson Memorial Home in West Liberty.

Funeral service will be held 10:30 a.m. Monday Feb. 15, 2010, at the First Church United in West Liberty. Burial will be in the Oak Ridge Cemetery in West Liberty. Visitation will be held Sunday from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Henderson-Barker Funeral Home in West Liberty.

Don was born July 5, 1921, in Cedar County, the son of Lloyd and Sophia “Peggy” Wendt Beaver. He attended country schools and later married Lourena Barkhurst near West Liberty on July 14, 1943. The couple farmed south of Atalissa on “Poverty Knob” for 27 years before retiring and moving to West Liberty.

Don was a member of the West Liberty School Board and Atalissa Community Club. He loved to play cards and many family gatherings involved playing cards as well as Don’s many years of playing at “The Establishment.” Don and Lourena attended many dances in their younger years. He was always smiling, loved all of his family and as his daughter said, “he had a wonderful life.”

Survivors include his wife Lourena of West Liberty; six children: Sue (Jerry) McConnell of Solon, Steve (Sheila) Beaver of Hernando, Miss., Jody (Diane) Beaver of West Liberty, Jan Vedepo (Mark Vetter) of Columbus Junction, Alan Beaver (Donna Brun) of Hills and Andy (Becky) Beaver of Wapello; 17 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and sister Luva Jean (Elmer) Petersen of Tipton.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Buck and Marvin.
