Heating bill assistance available
News · October 14, 2009

Community Action of Eastern Iowa is now accepting applications for the 2009-2010 Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program for elderly and handicapped households.

All other low income households may begin applying on Nov. 1. The program serves homeowners and renters in Muscatine County and is designed to pay a portion of a household’s winter heating costs. Last year nearly 1,700 households applied for assistance in Muscatine County.

When applying, applicants should bring proof of income for the past 90 days, a recent copy of a heating and electric bill, and a phone bill which may qualify the household for a discount on local service. Eligibility is based upon federally established income guidelines. For example, a household of four can earn no more than $8,268 in the past 90 days. Eligible households may also receive weatherization services such as insulation and other energy conservation measures.

Households who are over LIHEAP regular income guidelines may still be eligible for LIHEAP benefits through the medical waiver component. The medical expenses must be documented, paid, and non-reimbursable.

For more information or to apply, interested persons should contact Community Action of Eastern Iowa at 148 Colorado Street in Muscatine, 263-9290 or toll free 1-800-263-9290. Staff will also be in West Liberty at the Depot each Monday to take applications, 627-3355. The last day to apply is April 30, 2010. No appointment is necessary.
