Big East, EIHC will face off

TIPTON — Fans of both the Eastern Iowa Hawkeye Conference and the Big East Conference in Eastern Iowa have one last chance to see their favorite hoops stars on the court before the spring sports season gets under way.
The second annual Eastern Iowa Hawkeye Conference-Big East senior basketball shootout will be held on Sunday, March 30 at the Tipton Middle School.

In the inaugural season, the Big East Conference swept the EIHC seniors with the girls winning 65-47 and the boys winning 100-89.

A girl’s all-star game will tip-off at 3 p.m. with the boy’s contest scheduled for 5:00 p.m. Admission is $5 for adults and $4 for students.

Seven all-conference team members lead the EIHC girls team. Solon’s Kristi Hinrichs (12.0 ppg), Durant guard Kourtney Lilienthal (9.4 ppg), Durant forward Katelyn Lilienthal (8.4 ppg), Durant guard Whittni Regan (8.8 ppg), Wilton guard Tony Lohmeyer (11.0 ppg), Regina forward Caitlin Nowicki (12.0 ppg) and West Branch forward Lizzy Tucker (7.7 ppg) look to get revenge on the Big East team this season.

For the Big East girls team, 12 of the 14 roster spots are from players on the All-Conference team. Olin first team member and All-State player Kalli Hansen leads the Big East squad. Hansen led the Lions and the conference in scoring with a 21.3 average. Other first team members on the Big East team are Calamus-Wheatland guard Ashley O’Neill (12.8 ppg), Prince of Peace forward Lauren Ryan (15.5 ppg) and Bellevue Marquette guard Lindsey Haxmeier (10.5 ppg).

For the EIHC boys team, first team All-State players Darian Patterson of Mid-Prairie (15.3 ppg, 7.3 rpg.) and Mike Lafrenz (19.2 ppg, 11.2 rbpg.) of Tipton lead a strong team.

For the Big East boy’s team, all 12-roster spots are members of the Big East all-conference team. Preston’s Tayden Helmle (14.2 ppg, 5.1 rpg) and Bellevue Marquette’s Ryan Tebbe (20.9 ppg, 7.2 rpg) lead a balanced team looking to win again this year for the Big East.
