Ethel Marie (Birkett) Worrall, 99, passed away Oct. 5, 2007, at the Crestview Nursing and Rehab Center in West Branch following an extended illness.

Memorial services were held 10 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 10, at the Springdale United Methodist Church with Rev. Ruth Blayer officiating. The Henderson-Barker Funeral Home in West Branch is in charge of arrangements.

Ethel was born Jan. 29, 1908, in West Liberty the daughter of Vincent and May James Birkett. In 1955, she was united in marriage to Donald Worrall whom she met while working in the bank in West Branch.

Ethel attended schools in West Liberty, graduating with the class of 1925. She later attended the University of Iowa where she graduated in 1930. From there she pursued her career as a teacher. Ethel was a lifetime resident of Iowa with brief absences while she taught school in Illinois and California. Many present day citizens of the West Branch area will remember being in her classroom.

She was a longtime active member of the Springdale United Methodist Church, the Eastern Star, the South Prairie Grange and the Women’s Farm Bureau.

Survivors include two nephews: James T. Birkett of Springfield, Ill., and Ronald P. Brown of West Liberty; two nieces: Eloise Brown Rafferty of Grinnell and Janice (Brown) Christensen of Coralville.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Don, in 1981; brother, James; and sisters: Blanche Birkett, Edith Grunder and Dorothy Brown.
