West Branch High School’s freshman-sophomore football team saw its first district loss Oct. 9 to North Cedar’s Knights, 38-7, at Stanwood.

The team now has a 5-2 record overall, 4-1 in the district.

“The score and loss are disappointing, but they were a result of a couple factors. One out of our control, and the other is losing possessions due to five turnovers. Three of those gave North Cedar touchdowns, including one inside the red zone which resulted in the Knights starting from our 6 yard line,” Coach Matt Hills said.

“In post game, my message was: ‘When we wear “Bears” on our jersey, we become a desired target for opposing teams. That’s a compliment to the program and these young men. Our focus, starting Tuesday, is on Tipton for Friday night.”

Hills said he and the coaches try to prepare the freshmen and sophomores for varsity.

“There were circumstances this West Branch team faced in this game, beyond the outcome, that will be remembered,” the coach said. “All I can say is that tonight they take a ton of fuel with them to motivate for their next Varsity meeting with North Cedar.”

West Branch’s sole touchdown came in the second quarter when quarterback Kelby Burger threw a six-yard pass to Cael Fiderlein. Fiderlein then kicked an extra point.

The Bears amassed 200 yards of offense, with 137 through passing. The lost three fumbles as well.
