Governor visiting Scattergood

Gov. Kim Reynolds will travel to West Branch to visit Scattergood Friends School and Farm on Wednesday, Oct. 11.

During the governor’s visit, students will present one project from the recent Farm Term. They used mathematical and statistical calculations to implement a gravity-fed irrigation system that collects rainwater and distributes it throughout the farm’s high-tunnel (greenhouse) that is nearly 100 feet long and 30 feet wide. Following this presentation, Governor Reynolds will join students and staff for a regular farm-fresh lunch.

The governor is interested in schools that practice and educate students about sustainability, read a press release from Scattergood.

“Scattergood definitely has a story to tell when it comes to minimizing the carbon footprint for a community of students and staff living on campus,” read the release. “While the school began in the 19th Century, students now engage in rigorous college-level work and developing relevant skills that they can apply to the 21st Century.”

The organic farm is one of the school’s key “living laboratories,” it read.

Based on the model of “right-sized sustainability,” Scattergood Farm consumes minimum amounts of non-renewable energy to feed the school 10 months out of every year.

“Scattergood’s commitment to sustainability runs so deep that all kitchen scraps and compostable paper from the campus return to the farm’s soil,” read the statement.
