No. 11 Regina rolls through Bears in 3 sets

The West Branch volleyball team hasn’t quite hit its stride yet. With a Sept. 26 loss to 11th-ranked Regina at West Branch in three sets, the Bears’ record fell to 5-11. Scores were 25-17, 25-20 and 25-13.
“I thought we had a lot of good plays at the net,” West Branch Head Coach John Walsh said. “We stopped a lot of balls, but we didn’t dig too many of the harder balls they hit tonight.”

The Bears started the first set with a 4-1 lead. Regina had two hitting errors then a kill. A Regina serving error was followed by a kill by Kaiya Luneckas for a 4-1 West Branch lead. A Regina kill, a Regina serving error, and another Regina kill made it 5-2, Bears. Two West Branch hitting errors tied the set at 5-5. Regina scored two points, then a kill by Abbey Fryauf and a kill by Mackenzie Heise tied the set at 7-7. The Regals scored the next five points, and the Bears called a time out.

A double hit call on the Bears made the score 13-7, Regina. Fryauf got a kill then served an ace for a 13-9 score. A double hit call on the Bears made it 14-10. Regina scored the next three points, The Regals had a four hits call to make it 17-11. A kill by the Regals, a kill by Luneckas, and a double hit by the Regals made the score 19-13. Two West Branch errors and a kill by Fryauf made it 20-14. A West Branch serving error, a Bears’ kill, and an ace by Sophie Nopoulos made it 21-16. The Bears had a hitting error, and took a time out trailing 22-16.

The Regals got a kill, then the Bears failed to return the ball. A net serve by Regina made the score 24-17. The final point of the set came when the Bears didn’t return the ball for a 25-17 first set score.

The Bears started the second set strong, but Regina kept coming. A kill by Luneckas was the Bears’ first point. A double hit call on West Branch tied the score at 1-1. The Regals served the ball into the net, then West Branch hit the ball out of bounds for a 2-2 tie. Fryauf got a kill then scored a point at the net. Regina had a double hit, then Fryauf had a kill for a 6-2 West Branch lead. The Bears had an error and a violation. A kill by Fryauf made it 7-4, Bears.

Two West Branch errors and a net serve by the Regals made the score 8-6. Regina tied the score on two West Branch errors.

Regina had an error and scored a point at the net. Then Regina scored another point at the net, then failed to return the ball. Two Regina points and a net serve made it 9-9. The teams traded points, then Fryauf had a kill. A Regina kill, a kill by Luneckas, and another kill by the Regals made it 12-12. Fryauf got three consecutive kills to take a 15-12 West Branch lead. The Regals scored two points on a West Branch error and a Regina kill. The Regals hit the ball out of bounds, the Bears had a net serve, then an out-of-bounds hit by Regina tied the set at 16-16. Each team had a hitting error for a 17-17 tie, then the Regals went on a 5-0 run.

The Regals scored on a serving error, a block, two West Branch hitting errors, and a kill for a 22-17 Regina lead. McKenna Walsh got a kill, Regina was called for a double hit, then the Regals hit the ball out of bounds. Regina scored the next three points to take the set. The Bears were under the net, then Regina scored two points. The set score was 25-10, and Regina had a 2-0 lead.

Regina won the third set by 12 points. Regina got the first point of the set when West Branch didn’t return the ball. Regina hit the ball into the net, then West Branch had a net serve. A kill attempt hit too far by the Bears made the score 3-1, Regina. West Branch didn’t return the ball again, then Fryauf got a kill. Regina hit the ball too far for a 4-3 Regals lead. Regina took a time out.

The Regals scored three consecutive points after the time out on a kill and two West Branch hitting errors. Fryauf scored a point at the net for a 7-4 Regina lead. Three West Branch errors and a Regina kill made the score 11-4. A Bears’ kill attempt went into the net for a Regina point. Regina hit the ball into the net then got a kill. A kill by M. Walsh made the score 13-6. Regina failed to return the ball then got a kill. The Regals hit the ball out of bounds then got a kill for a 15-8 score.

After a point by Regina, Luneckas got a kill for a 16-10 score. Regina got a kill, then Luneckas got a block. A kill and a block by Regina made the score 19-11. Fryauf got a kill, Regina got a kill, and, trailing 20-12, the Bears took a time out.

Regina scored two points on West Branch errors, then an Regina error made it 22-13. The final three points of the set and match came on a West Branch serving error and two Regina kills. The set score was 25-13, and the match score was 3-0.

“We went into tonight hoping to play our best game,” Regina Head Coach Robin Akers said. “And I think we did.”
