West Branch High School wants to help with hurricane relief, calling for donations after Hurricane Harvey hit Texas and before Hurricane Irma struck in Florida.

Social Studies teacher Kevin Gaster and reading/language arts teacher Connor Saad will lead the effort that challenges their classes to collect change in the “Change Making Change” Competition.

Can the public join in?

“Absolutely,” Gaster said, and they can even direct their donations to a particular class.

The deadline for donations is Sept. 19.

Checks may be made out to West Branch High School. However, the classes are competing based on the mass of their donation, and the teachers even included a chart showing the weight, thickness and diameter of coins.

Half of the money will be donated to the Houston Food Bank, he said. The rest will go to an organization in Florida that has yet to be chosen.

“We know with Hurricane Irma … that they will be in need of help as well,” he said.

The donations will be turned into a bank and sent as a check, Gaster noted.

The social studies teacher said he led a class discussion about the effects of the hurricane on Americans.

At the end of the fundraiser, the team with the heaviest bin will get to select a member of the staff to tape to the wall during lunch.
