City council petitions ready
News · August 17, 2017

Voters in November will decide on three elected seats in city leadership: mayor and two city council members.

Seats open in the Nov. 7 election are currently held by Mayor Roger Laughlin, Tim Shields and Mary Beth Stevenson.

Petitions to run became available July 31 at the City Offices and Cedar County Auditor’s office.

No one has yet turned in petitions to run, though Jodee Stoolman announced her candidacy with a sign on an ATV she rode in the Hoover’s Hometown Days parade.

Those who wish to appear on the ballot must submit 10 valid signatures either to City Offices or the county auditor. Filing is permitted between Aug. 28 and 5 p.m. Sept. 21.

Stevenson was appointed to the council in 2013 then elected to a four-year term. Shields was also elected in 2013. Laughlin was appointed mayor following the death of Mayor Mark Worrell in June 2015, then Laughlin won an election to finish out Worrell’s unexpired two-year term.
