The 2017 Catalpa Corners Charity Horse Trials will be held Aug. 5 and 6 in rural West Branch.

“The newest thing this year is having the adult and the junior team championships (at Catalpa Corner),” event coordinator Ali Hayford said. “Last year we had the junior rider championship here.”

The junior rider championship will be held in Chicago this year.

The Catalpa Corner event is full with 176 riders. There are approximately 20 riders on the wait list.

Greg Schlappi is the course designer. This is his third year in the role.

This is a Midwest event, and riders from Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Nebraska, Kansas, and Missouri will be competing.

The barns open at 10 a.m. Aug. 4. Dressage is scheduled for 7:30 a.m. Aug. 5, and cross country is scheduled for 9:30 a.m.

Aug. 5 is the show jumping beginning at approximately 7:30 to 8 a.m.

The horse trials is a United States Eventing Association recognized event, a Central States Dressage and Eventing Association recognized event, and a United States Equestrian Federation recognized event.

Hayford thanked Catalpa Corner owners Jim and Susan (Brigham) McNutt for letting them use their property. “(Susan) doesn’t run the show anymore. She’s still actively involved in the park. They chose to step away. They’ll come down (to the trials) in memory of their son. He is really the reason this park is here.”

Madison Brigham died as the result of a car accident in 2004. The Catalpa Corner Charity Horse Trials was organized in his memory.
