Fatal crash on I-80
by Gregory R. Norfleet · News · July 13, 2017

A 2012 Dodge Journey minivan/station wagon crossover caught fire underneath the Delta Avenue bridge after, Iowa State Patrol Lt. Brian Votroubek said, the motorist possibly lost control and crashed into the concrete bridge tiller about 7:15 p.m. Sunday.
Votroubek said the driver, Neil Bell, 73, of Coralville, was ejected from the vehicle and declared dead at the scene. Emergency responders did not find any evidence of mechanical failure and had no witnesses to report why the vehicle crashed, leading police to determine Bell lost control while heading west near mile marker 256 near Scattergood Friends School.

While the crash occurred in the median, motorists slowed to drive around debris and emergency vehicles, backing up traffic “quite a ways,” Votroubek said.

Cedar County Sheriff, West Branch Fire Department and West Branch Police Department also responded to the scene.
