The Bears baseball team (5-16) lost two games of a double header at Regina (21-7) June 29.
The score of the first game was 4-2.

“It was 2-2 going into the bottom of the sixth, and they got two,” West Branch Head Coach Rich Stout said. “Defensively, we played really, really well. We turned a couple double plays. We had a couple opportunities to get a couple of runs. We just didn’t punch them across and that cost us in the end. Overall, in the first game, we played good baseball.”

The Bears were retired in order in the top of the first on a line out to center field and two strikeouts.

In the bottom of the first, the first Regina batter singled. The next batter hit into a double play. Shortstop Cade Aspelmeier fielded the ball, tossed it to second baseman Cale Donovan for the first out, and Donovan threw to Matt Paulsen at first base for the second out. The next two batters walked, then Tanner Lukavsky got a strikeout to end the inning.

Paulsen reached on an error to start off the Bears’ half of the second. A strikeout was followed by a fielder’s choice, and Paulsen was out at second base. Brady Lukavsky doubled, but a groundout ended the half-inning.

Regina scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the second. The first batter singled and reached second on an error. A single put runners at the corners. A groundout scored the run. The next batter walked. A fielder’s choice got the lead runner, T. Lukavsky to Donovan. The Regina runner at third tried to score on a wild pitch but Nick Schreiber fielded the ball and tossed it to T. Lukavsky who got the out to end the inning.

Eagle singled to left field with one out in the top of the third. T. Lukavsky singled, and a groundout moved the runners to second and third. Paulsen reached on an error which scored Eagle. A pop out to the catcher left a runner on base.

In the bottom of the third, the first Regina batter singled. A walk and a hit batsman loaded the bases. The Bears had another double play. The batter grounded out to the pitcher who threw home for the force out. Schreiber threw to first for the second out. The next two batters walked with the second walk forcing in a run. A groundout to Eagle at third resulted in an out at home and the end of the third inning.

The Bears were retired in order in the top of the fourth on two groundouts and a line out.

In the bottom of the fourth, the first batter grounded out to Donovan at second base. The next batter popped out to Donovan. A walk was followed by a pop out to Eagle at third base.

In the top of the fifth, the Bears evened the score with a run. Eagle got a double to left center field with one out. The next batter grounded out. A single by Pete Espensen to right field scored Eagle. The next batter grounded out to T. Lukavsky for the third out.

In the bottom of the fifth, the first batter reached on an error. The runner stole second base and took third on a groundout. A walk put runners at the corners. A strikeout, looking, and a groundout to shortstop Aspelmeier ended the inning. The score was tied 2-2.

The Bears were out in three at-bats in the top of the sixth. The first batter grounded out to the pitcher. The next batter grounded out to third base, and a groundout to the shortstop ended the half-inning.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Bears brought in a new pitcher. A walk was followed by a line out to B. Lukavsky in center field. A single to left and a groundout to second base was followed by a double, which scored one run. Another run scored on a wild pitch. A groundout to the shortstop ended the inning, but Regina had a 4-2 lead.

The Bears needed runs, but a line out, a strikeout, and a fly out ended the game.

Regina Head Coach Jeff Pacha called West Branch “a very respectable team.”

“They play the game the right way. They play hard. The first game, both teams played a clean game, and it moved quick. Their pitchers did a nice job.”
