by Norv and Mary Coblentz · Sports · June 22, 2017

The Bears won a non-conference game over Columbus at home June 16 in five innings.
The final score was 13-3.

“We put the ball in play,” West Branch Head Coach Rich Stout said. “We forced them into some errors. I thought Trey (Eagle) threw pretty well off the mound, especially after the first two innings. He settled down. The big thing was putting the ball into play. We knew if we could do that, we could force them into having to make plays. We did OK defensively. Part of that is they weren’t getting real good swings on Trey. The big thing is our young guys are getting a lot of innings on the mound and finding ways to win. Finding ways to win is a big thing.”

The Wildcats got one run across in the top of the first on a hit batsman, a single, and two wild pitches. Eagle got two strikeouts, and Ted Bridges had an unassisted out at first base.

“We’ve been telling the guys all week that we play some really quality opponents in our conference,” Columbus coach Jake McDullough said. “It was nice to step out and see a team we’ve never seen before. Similar record, similar makeup of young kids versus older kids.

“Let’s go have some fun and see what happens. Let’s be competitive. We did really well. We’re playing better than we have been.”
