Comets overcome Bears in double header
by Norv and Mary Coblentz · Sports · June 15, 2017

The West Branch softball team dropped both games of a double header at West Liberty June 12. Scores were 6-1 and 10-3.

“We’re showing inconsistency,” West Branch Head Coach Kevin Kaalberg said. “We’re not adjusting throughout the game. We’ve just got to keep working. This group is going to play hard. We’ve got to play smarter, anticipate things a little bit better on defense. Offensively, we’re not making any adjustments at all. Until you do, you’re going to suffer.”

In the first game, the Bears were retired in order in the top of the first. West Liberty scored two runs on a double, a sacrifice, and a home run.

The Bears were retired in order again in the top of the second. In the Comet half of the inning, they got a lead-off single, a strikeout by Kaiya Luneckas, a bounce out to Luneckas who threw to Maddy Hatfield for the out, and a groundout to Hatfield to end the inning.

Courtney Jarrett led off the third with a single to right center field. Hatfield sacrificed Jarrett to second base. A pop out and a ground out ended the half inning.

Two runs for the Comets scored in the bottom of the third for a 4-0 score.

A fly out and two groundouts took care of the Bears in the fourth. West Liberty got a one-out single, but a fly out to Mackenzie Heise in left field and a force out at home on a throw from Lexie Peak to Nikki Hensen ended the inning.

Jarrett got a two-out single down the third base line, but a strikeout ended their chance to score. The Comets scored one run in the bottom of the fifth.

In the top of the sixth, the Bears got a run on the scoreboard. Peak led off with a single liner down the third base line. She took second on a bounce out to second base. She advanced to third on a groundout to second base. Kaylee Montgomery was hit by a pitch to put runners at the corners. Chloe Pence hit a single up the middle, scoring Peak. A groundout ended the half-inning.

In the bottom of the sixth, a single and two steals and an error scored a run for the Comets. A strikeout, a line out to Peak at shortstop, and a groundout to Hanna Tisinger at pitcher ended the inning.

The Bears needed runs, but a strikeout, a groundout, and a pop out ended the game with the Comets leading 6-1.

In the nightcap, West Branch scored a run in the second, a run in the third, and a run in the fourth innings. But it wasn’t enough as the Comets scored two runs in the first, four in the third, two in the fourth and one in both the fifth and sixth innings.

“We got ahead in both games early and kept the pressure on all night long in both games,” West Liberty Head Coach Dave Reynolds said.
