Letter: A lot of work went into 2017 Memorial Day
Op-Ed · June 15, 2017

It could not have been a more perfect day. Just enough wind to keep the flags blowing. Having had nothing but too much wind and rain for days, it was just what we ordered.

When you see all the flags, on Main Street, at the cemeteries, do you ever wonder who did all that work? It is a big job and it takes many hands to get them up and blowing in the wind. After Monday, it was another big job to get them down and put away for another year. The American Legion steps up to get the job done. They are also grateful for the citizens who show up to help.

There is a lot of preparation and work to get ready for this day. The Legionnaires have three services, the first being at Appreciation Park downtown. The second at the West Branch Municipal Cemetery and the Avenue of Flags. And lastly at the West Branch High School. The program began with the West Branch High school playing the Star Spangled Banner.

There was a guest speaker, Robin Housely, a 25-year member of the United States Army. When the band began playing the United States Armed Forces Medley, those who served in the various branches stood as their song was played. Much clapping and cheering accompanied them. How proud we were of them. How proud they were to be so honored.

The Auxiliary ladies served refreshments at the conclusion of the program.

All these programs involved many people. The American Legion was there.

The guest speaker was there. Our veterans were there. We are so thankful to the High School Band. They were there. The Auxiliary ladies were there.

If you were there, thank you, All the work and preparations were done.

All you had to do was show up. WERE YOU THERE? WHERE WERE YOU?
