One man suffered “serious and incapacitating” injuries after a two-car crash 10:05 a.m. Monday on Interstate 80 near the 253 milemarker, just west of Lower West Branch Road bridge.

According to an Iowa State Patrol report, Monica Frost, 30, of Olathe, Kan., was driving a 2008 Mazda 5 westbound on I-80 when she approached a 2009 Ford Econoline E250 parked on the shoulder with a flat tire.

Frost reportedly tried to change lanes from the right to the left to go around the van, but another vehicle was occupying that lane.

Frost then overcorrected to return to her lane, striking the van in the rear driver’s side.

Shane Christiansen, 31, of Davenport, was driving the van, owned by Global Acquisitions Limited, but had stopped to change the tire. His injuries were the most serious.

Frost had three passengers in her car, all family members: Daniel Frost, 30, Sam Frost, 3, and Henry Frost, 1. All members of the Frost family were transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, according to the ISP.

Iowa State Patrol, Johnson County Ambulance Service, Johnson County Sheriff’s Department and West Branch Fire Department all responded to the scene.

Fire Chief Kevin Stoolman said two WBFD trucks and eight emergency responders arrived at the scene.

An ISP report stated that a patrol car blocked both westbound lanes to allow a helicopter ambulance to land. The highway was closed for about 35 minutes.
