Four West Branch Middle School track and field athletes traveled to Ames High School for the Mike Henderson Middle School Track and Field State Meet and brought back medals for relays.
Attending were eighth-graders Morgan Hartz, Jeff Bowie and Dominic Culver, as well as seventh-grader Thomas Gould .

Bowie’s father, Tom, took the group over to compete among nearly 800 other middle school athletes.

In the 4x100, the squad finished fourth with 50.88 seconds; in the 4x200, the squad earned gold by winning with 1:45.47.

Tom Bowie said the competition was very tight, and 0.13 seconds separated the quartet, which finished sixth overall, from third place.

“We knew it would be competitive,” Tom said, “but we didn’t know we would bring home the gold.”

Bowie, separately, won the shot put with 46 feet, 5.5 inches, and the discus with 138 feet, 8 inches.

Gould separately ran in the seventh-grade 100-meter hurdles and finished second despite tripping on a hurdle and falling, Tom said, finishing with 16.23 seconds.

“It was a good day,” the father said.
