Letter: Hey, grads: Congrats, and read Preamble
Op-Ed · May 11, 2017

Congratulations and well-wishes to all who leave behind high school and college life to take your places in the many circles of adulthood and community life.

Starting new jobs, or new families, volunteering for different community or global goals are all enriched by learning from others, and by deepening our understanding of various concepts.

In moments of turmoil in our society, take some time to research the letters sent to and by the men who took a leap of faith in this untested style of government in the 1770’s, and then read again the Preamble to our constitution that resulted from those written conversations.

So much hope in those words, for us, the people, to keep seeking justice, to keep defining the scope of “the general welfare” according to new knowledge and needs, to never cease working on perfecting our union.

Please don’t forget to take your place in maintaining a vibrant democratic republic.
